The Track Aero System (TAS)

Our innovative TAS is a cutting edge technology that allows real time testing of aerodynamic efficiency while you are riding. The system allows us to measure your CdA (coefficient of drag) as you ride and enables us to conclusively determine the optimal position and equipment combination for you and your bike, ultimately improving your performance.

Aerotesting with Alphamantis

In our all-inclusive Aero Fit service, you will work directly with a bike fit professional who will record your position and identify areas of possible improvement, in addition to defining potential bio-mechanical limits to certain fit options. Once your fit analysis is complete, we begin with a baseline measurement of your CdA utilizing the TAS. We then test various positions and equipment options to ensure the lowest possible drag, while maintaining a proper bio-mechanical position while you ride. Our ultimate goal is to make you faster. We work with exclusive fit specialists at each location. If you have a preferred bike fitter that you choose to work with, let us know, and we’ll be happy to work with them.

Real time analysis

This is our TAS Dashboard where all your data is gathered and shown in real time. Current coefficient of drag is shown in the bottom graph for easier analysis. Your fitting coach will be able to modify your position during your test and the results are immediately shown on the screen! In order to analyze multiple riders simultaneously (pursuit teams) each cyclist drag is shown in a different color.

Beautiful Design

This is the Device Recognition Tool, an easy-to-use interface where specific data is entered to ensure testing accuracy. This tool gathers information from an ANT + device called Alphamantis Bridge that is placed on your bike for testing. Additional information is also entered into this program to ensure perfect testing.

Results Analysis

Averages are calculated for your runs to compare each setup and identify the most optimal for you. And that’s it you’ll be faster than ever in no time!

The end result is powerful, actionable data… The implications are like a wind tunnel but, in many ways, better. While some wind tunnels sell tunnel time to amateur riders who want to refine their position, they don’t allow for actual riding.

Perhaps the most interesting revelation here is just how person-specific aerodynamics are… I think that the indoor track testing is an incredible tool to start to understand how to literally get free speed – even with no equipment changes, and do so in an environment where you’re actually riding.

The TAS is the only system of its kind available in the world for aerotesting outside of a wind tunnel. Our accuracy, proven results, and service will help you achieve your goals and have fun in the process.

Aero Test: step by step

The Alphamantis experience begins even before you set foot on the velodrome, by providing the most personalized service to our clients we guarantee that not only will you be faster but very satisfied with the whole testing experience!

The Track Aero System is for athletes of all levels.  We provide serious results, but it’s not just for the “pro’s.” We work with top level bike fit specialists to ensure an optimal aero testing session. We will work with you to get the results you need.  The following list outlines the basic steps for your aero testing service:

Once you sign up for an Aero Test, you will complete a short questionnaire.  This just takes just a few minutes to answer and will be very important in preparing for your aero testing session. Consider everything you want to test like your shoes, socks, suit, bikes, helmets, water bottles, GoPro, or any other piece of equipment.

Arrive an hour prior to your test session so we have time to prepare you and your bike for the aero test.

During this time we identify your ANT+ devices and utilize Retül motion capture technology to record and evaluate your current position. Note that this is not a bike fit, but an analysis of your current position so that we understand any bio-mechanical limitations and identify areas for improvement.

If you’ve never ridden on a velodrome, don’t worry!  You will be given detailed instructions on how it’s done. You’ll be given time to get comfortable riding the banked corners — it’s actually quite easy – and fun!

Now it’s time for your test!  Your power, speed and bike are linked with an Alphamantis bridge (all provided to you) to the system, and we are ready to measure your CdA in real time while you ride. 🙂

Each test – or “run” – takes about 10-12 laps (one lap = 250 M), and is followed by a quick overview of the results, in addition to making any changes necessary for the next run.

Each following run works the same way; a typical Aero Test will allow for approximately eight runs in a two hour period.

We discuss the numbers and findings of your test once it’s complete.  If necessary, we will do a final motion capture of the final position to ensure it is bio-mechanically optimal.

Then, we follow up your test with a comprehensive report summarizing and detailing each run. This report is emailed to you in PDF, along with the pictures and videos of your test, don’t forget to tag Alphamantis when you share them on social media! 😉

The numbers that matter:

What is CdA?

Drag area, or CdA, is a measure of how well-shaped you are aerodynamically. A low CdA means that you efficiently convert the power you apply into forward speed.

Here are some common vehicles’ drag areas, just for comparison:

  • F1 car: 1.0 m^2
  • Bike commuter: 0.600 m^2
  • Road bike cyclist: 0.350 m^2
  • Amateur time trialist: 0.290 m^2
  • Elite time trialist: 0.220 m^2
  • Elite track pursuiter: 0.200 m^2

Frequently Asked Questions

Is aero testing just for Pro teams and Pro athletes?

Absolutely not! Improving your aerodynamics will make you faster without the need to output additional power. The results we have provided our athletes are similar to what you would achieve with one or two years of extensive training to increase your power, so why wait to get faster if you can do it today? Professionals – and athletes of all levels – choose Alphamantis’ aero test because it’s effective, saving 20 watts by making fit or equipment changes can get you to the finish line over the course of a 40k race, or Olympic triathlon, around a full minute faster!

Is Alphamantis’ Aero Test right for me?

If you’re looking to increase your speed and get to the finish line faster, then YES.  In addition to your test, if you need any additional bike fit services, we can offer reduced rates with one of our partners.

I’m a triathlete/Ironman is Aero Testing for me?

Definitely yes! If your goal is to get to the finish line faster, we can help you achieve that. We help you optimize your cycling performance so you can focus on your swimming and running!

How will I know what setup is the fastest for me?

Once your fit analysis is complete, we begin with a baseline measurement of your CdA utilizing the TAS. We then test various positions and/or equipment options to ensure the lowest possible drag, while maintaining a proper bio-mechanical position while you ride. Once your Aero Test is complete, you will receive a full report comparing each setup that was tested and detailing the power and time savings you can achieve when using the most optimal setup.

What do I need to bring to my Aero Test?

You need your bike, your gear, and anything you want to test (i.e. helmets, different race kits, bars, stems, any other position-related equipment changes).

Do I Need a Power Meter?

You don’t need a power meter. Our team provides a PowerTap rear wheel for accurate, consistent measurement of your power throughout the test for optimal results.

What results can I expect to get?

Aerodynamics are a very personal subject which makes it impossible for us to give you an exact answer. However, we have observed that in average competitive cyclists can see power savings of 3-6% that means you will be more than a minute faster in a 40km race!
